In 2015, we expanded the Intern Study to China by starting to recruit interns at Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH). A total of 83 PUMCH interns, representing 74% of eligible participants, completed an initial survey before beginning their training in September 2015. Four follow-up surveys were conducted throughout the intern year. Preliminary findings suggest that many stress-related challenges common in the U.S. may also be emerging within the Chinese system.

 

In 2016, with support from a U-M/SJTU Joint Institute grant, we enrolled an additional 400 interns from 14 hospitals affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). Our ongoing recruitment efforts have successfully attracted 500-600 new SJTU residents each year.

 

In July 2021, we received a Michigan Medicine-PKUHSC Joint Institute award in collaboration with Peking University Sixth Hospital (Institute of Mental Health). Three additional institutions and 15 more hospitals have joined the China Study recruitment pool. We have completed two cohorts’ data and sample collection and are now focused on data analysis and manuscript preparation.

 

So far, we have published three manuscripts using data from the China study and continue to conduct further analyses. We strongly believe in the potential benefits of U.S.-China collaboration. Through the amalgamation and analysis of additional data, we hope to gain valuable insights into the internship programs at both locations.
